Extension springs work in the opposite manner to compression springs. While compression springs offer resistance to axial compression, extension springs offer resistance to axial extension. As such, when the mechanism where the spring is located is separated at the ends, the extension spring offers resistance to this movement, returning the mechanism to its original position.
